For real though, why don’t you work out?  We all strive to be in shape, healthy, AND eat whole pizzas or five chocolate chip cookies at once.  Now you have me thinking of these sweet, freshly baked, oh so soft cookies with melted chocolate morsels inside!   Don’t you want to shove all five in your mouth right now?   I kind of do, but guess what, I am not going to.  Now what? 

Self Battles

First of all, there is a thing known as self-battles.  For some, it is deciding what to wear in the morning.  If you are Mark Zuckerberg you probably don’t have this problem on a daily basis because he has a thousand identical shirts.  Or maybe we can’t decide on how to get our nails done or what birthday gift to buy.  Ok, gift cards work for most people, but still, which gift card do you purchase??  These are all decisions we contemplate on making.  The big question still remains, why don’t you work out as much as you want?  Why can’t we challenge ourselves and make it happen?

Obstacles and Barriers

Yea, there are obstacles and barriers.  I mean, I cannot count how many times my son has left Legos and Superheros on the floor in the middle of a walkway.  Btw, I am saying this was a barrier to where I was going.  Guess what happened, I picked them up and continued on my way.  Yes, he was sentenced to a five-minute timeout when I saw him, after school, that is.  What are your restrictions and barriers?  Time, what about time?  Everyone has the same 24 hours in one day or is this a bologna statement?  Who even likes bologna?  Not me.  

Create Opportunities

Alright, alright, this is the part where I tell you about creating an opportunity out of nothing.  Did you ever hear, when you want something bad enough, you’ll get it?  Well, I am not saying that because I want to win a million dollars and save all the lost puppies in the world, but let’s be real.  My fantasy wishes may not come true and unfortunately, all the puppies in the world will not be saved.  Sad thought.  However, everyone can be healthy and stay accomplishing healthy goals.

Make it Happen

Enough of the pep talk, I will teach you my ways.  Let’s use time as an example.  Typically, people work 9-5, come home, make dinner, relax a little or take care of little ones, then head to bed.  Of course, people work different hours and hold different responsibilities.  The good thing is these tips are useful to everyone in every situation. 

Here is how you will make time for little exercises throughout the day.  You will take the time you are already working with and turn it around.  These are beginner steps, nothing huge!  Think about the things you are doing already, this is in no particular order, watching the news, showering, drying your hair, daydreaming.  I’ll admit I do quite a bit of daydreaming.  Getting your kids ready for school, cooking dinner, washing clothes, drying the clothes, and whatever else you do, the list could go on.  Remember, this is beginner stuff.   Just analyze your daily routine and how you can squeeze five or ten minutes more into each task or do more than one thing at the same time.

How many commercials do you see while watching the news?  My favorite commercial is the Schick Xtreme 3 Commercial from 2015, where the guy shaves his head right before an interview, the one you have probably seen at least one hundred times.  What are you doing during commercials?  Want an idea?  Grab some dumb bells and start working those muscles during commercial breaks.  Don’t have dumb bells, go to the cupboard and take a couple things of canned goods or water jugs, they all work the same.  Here’s another tip, while you are standing there drying your hair, march or walk in place, get those feet moving!  While you’re in the laundry room, take five minutes out and do some lunges, squats, or jumping jacks, these are all great exercises.   What about creating some workout time while you are waiting on your dish to heat up in the microwave or the stove to pre-heat, walk in place for a few minutes or seconds, every move counts.  Believe me, you can do these easy tasks, I know you can!  Don’t feel silly doing burpees in front of the microwave, you are improving your health and your body will thank you!

You are already about the workout, gym life and want tips on making healthy eating choices or creating healthy habits?  I got you!  Start small or medium, which ever you prefer.  There is no such thing as go big or go home in this story.  Small tasks include making a switch, once a day.  Instead of grabbing a soft drink, go for a water.  I know you really want a second donut when you see a box just sitting there.  Believe me, we all want at least two sprinkled donuts per day, but save some for others and only treat yourself to one.  Limitations are key.  I am not a person to bet except when I make friendly bets with my son on who can run to the car faster or jump higher.  Create healthy challenges with your friends and family, they will all love you for it.  What about changing your routine?  Do you always drive to work or the market?  If you can, try walking the entire way and if that is not an option, park further from your destination and partially walk or bike there. 

Emotional Feels

Are you a ball of anxiety who covers up emotions with food?  I totally get you and am here to help!  Stressed from work, a partner, friend, child, pet lizard, or something else and think ice cream and fudge brownies will help?  You guessed it, these treats are a distraction to the emotions you are facing.  Besides, you better share those fudge brownies with me!  I know you’ve heard it a gazillion times, but working out can and will heighten your serotonin levels, leaving you feeling happier and less stressed.  A little personal, but I used to be on high doses of anxiety and depression meds.  Now, I work out during these times of high stress and anxiety.  Yes, there are times when I cannot make it to the gym, but I bust out some exercises at home or wherever I am at and have no need for medication anymore.  I am not a doctor so don’t stop following your doctors’ orders.  However, there are alternate and healthy ways to redirect your energy, positive or negative and get the most out of life.

Just Do It

Overall, there are many ways to treat your body right and improve your health.  Take simple steps and you will get there.  Yes, you might see me marching while I dry my hair or jump roping while waiting on my son to get off the bus.  But, hey, this is me making an effort and you can too!  Give me twenty pushups right now.  Kind of kidding, but seriously do it.  Stop letting excuses stop you from accomplishing your goals.  Do not cheat yourself, I know you (the one reading this) can make it happen!  So do it, now!

Swearing and a Kids Life

What did you just say?  Be honest, do you or your kids swear?   

When I was a small kid, my mom and dad did not approve of swearing, but every now and then I would say something under my breathe. I still don’t think they ever found out, shhhh.  

“How do people, like, not curse?  How is it possible?  There are gaps in speech were you just have to put a ‘f*ck”, wrote Nick Hornby in A Long Way Down.   

Do you catch yourself saying sh*t or f*ck?  I do when I am not even thinking about it.  The first time my son swore it was of pure innocence.  He said, SHIT when he couldn’t tie his shoe. The one bunny ear would not go inside the other bunny ear or something like that.  I’ll admit, it was slightly funny until he said it at school and well, it made me think of what happened to Matilda?  Jk.  There aren’t scary chairs at kids’ schools anymore.  Now, he sais, language and gets a quarter every time I accidentally swear.

This made me think of lyrics to a popular song where one of the words could be played around with and may sound like a curse word.

5 Life Hacks to Save Time During the Week

One word, busy.  This word has so many meanings for all of us, working, taking care of kids, and maybe kickboxing during the week.  We could all use more time so why not knock out the excuses and take advantage of the time we do have?

5 Life Hacks

Starting with Sunday, here are 5 life hacks to save time during the week.  

1.Prepare Meals

I know you hear this over and over again, but there is a reason for it.  Remember when we were kids and had a lunch menu?  Maybe not, but anyway, I have my sons’ lunch menu displayed on the fridge right now.  You get what I am saying?  Make a lunch menu for yourself!  Grocery shop on Sunday and create a weekly meal plan, you will thank yourself and maybe even me, if I am lucky.  Hint: Buy in bulk if you are cooking for a family or are a fan of eating leftovers.  My favorite foods are chicken, chicken, and chicken with some veggies and a little dash of seasonings.  

  1. Fuel Up

Stop procrastinating and start pumping.  Go to the gas station on Sunday and fill your gas tank to the f line, referring to full.  By filling up your car with fuel, you will save time from making multiple gas station stops during the week.  Bonus!  If you grocery shop at a store like Giant Eagle or Shop N Save, who offers fuel perks, you will save time and money!  Hooray!

P.S. If you don’t have a vehicle (I know the feeling) then buy a public bus pass ahead of time.  You don’t want to be THAT person, digging out change to pay the bus fare while people are waiting.

 

  1. Laundry

Who likes dirty laundry?  No one!  I hate thinking about smelly socks and dirty underwear.  Life hack #3, wash clothes on Sunday and free up more time during the week.  I mostly use detergent with added baking soda because it removes stains from fabric.  You got me, I am a messy eater and was referring to my clothes, not my sons’.

 Try this detergent to get the cleanest clothes!

 

  1. Play dress up

Not really though.  What I mean is plan your outfits for the week.  You can hang or fold your Monday through Friday outfits in order.  Ok, this might be more challenging for us ladies, but try it.  If I could make it happen so can everyone else.  This is where labeling or color-coded hangers come into play.

 

  1. Keep a planner

Can you say, lifesaver?  I am sure you readers out there have a busy life especially if you add kids, employer’s, employees, friends, co-workers, significant others, and families to the mix.  Phew, did I miss anything?  Get a pen in your hand and PLAN.  Write down everything, from scheduled appointments to phone calls to everything in between.

1. PB&J

A classic comfort food. Whether you toast the bread, microwave it, or leave it cold, this sandwich is never a letdown. My go-to is natural creamy peanut butter and natural strawberry preserves. I spoon a small amount of strawberry goodness on one piece of bread, spread peanut butter on the other piece and press them together! Boom, a deluxe PB&J breakfast!

My favorite is whole grain waffles They are a time crunchers favorite. Just grab two or three frozen waffles out of the freezer and place them in the toaster. Within minutes you will have a ready to eat breakfast. Jam and syrup is optional.

Nothing is more filling than warm oatmeal! To make it even better, add apple pieces. You can chop up any apple, red delicious and granny smiths are my top choices. Heat up the oatmeal and then add the apple or heat them up together for the ultimate breakfast meal.

How I Gave Up Caffeine & You Can Too!

I thought, I’m not like everyone else, I don’t drink coffee. Yes, I tried it, but I didn’t enjoy the taste. I did not like flavored, iced, hot, steamed, or any other coffee. Coffee is life for some and maybe one day I will be a fan, but not today. Instead, my daily caffeine consumption included drinking three or four energy drinks a day. Rockstars, Red Bulls, Monsters, I drank them all. I would grab whatever can the convenient store had in stock. One time, I bought three cases of Red Bull and a case of Rockstar cans from Amazon, only once, I swear.

Caffeine comes in many forms and whether it was tea, an energy drink, or a straight shot of espresso, I liked it. Sometimes, I would go wild and drink a double amount. I thought, two shots of espresso, score! Then, a couple hours later go back for more. What did this feel like? Like a caffeine god was delivering me a much-needed boost. But, what I left out is the crash and after effects. To avoid a caffeine crash and calm my anxiety, I distracted myself with games or projects which required more caffeine to keep up. Looking back, I was in a revolving door filled with caffeine. Kind of weird to imagine.

Today is the day I will stop drinking caffeine, I said to myself. Then I thought, is this where the “cold turkey” saying comes into play? If so, then I went cold turkey. At least, I think this is ok to say.

Day 1

Woke up. No caffeine. My mind and body was mad, why are you doing this? Caffeine was like legs to walking for me. Needless to say, the morning was rough, I was tired and feeling like someone stuck in a slow-motion Snapchat filter. But, I pushed through and drank a Naked juice instead. Anything that says Naked is a good idea, you cannot tell me any different. The juice seemed to help with energy, but I still felt tired. Soon enough I went to bed and was looking forward to the next day.

Day 2

Buzz. Buzz. Buzz. The alarm went off and I was not ready to get up. I pushed the snooze button about three times. Ok, ok, I am up, I said to myself. My son and I then got ready for our day. We walked to the bus stop, he jumped on his yellow school bus and I went on the Port Authority bus to work. During the bus ride to work, I felt myself drifting to sleep.Similar to the day before, I found a Green Machine Naked juice and drank it. My energy level from the juice was different, I did not feel anxious or agitated by the smallest things, but instead felt revitalized and ready for the day. Day two was a success.

Day 3

My plan was to wake up early and workout prior to leaving for the bus stop and work. Instead, my body could not deal with the lack of caffeine so I did not start my day off as planned. After all, only three days have passed without the consumption of caffeine. I figured this would take a few more days to get used to. On another note, I did not fall asleep on the bus as usual, but my mind wondered off a couple times at work. Luckily, my charm made up for my attention span that day.

Day 4

 Did I really get to day four without caffeine? YES, and I was proud of myself! But, what was happening left me at shock. I was not dragging or crashing throughout the day, my stomach did not feel bloated, and I could think more clearly. So far, it took four days to get out of the caffeine trap.

Day 5

Why is it that when you are trying to stop something, America pushes it at you? Everywhere I went my favorite caffeine filled drinks were on sale and to top it off, my co-workers invited me to a new coffee place after work. Although I do not drink coffee, I would have most definitely joined my co-workers and grabbed some espressos or something to fulfill my energy need prior to this week. Well, I went and I enjoyed myself without having to live off caffeine.

Day 6

We are on day six! I mean, six days went by without consuming a single drop of caffeine! To my surprise, my mood was better this week than ever before and I was not falling asleep or drifting off throughout the day. What a game changer! Only one more left, did I make it?

Day 7

Woohoo, I made it and you could too! I thought this challenge would be more complicated than it was. I’ll admit, I cheated a little bit, I replaced caffeine with natural juices and vitamins. As you can see, giving up caffeine helped me relax in a positive way. Overall, this was a great experiment which helped me realize I was better off without caffeine.

Fall scream football.  Root for your favorite team by watching it live at the stadium or hang out and watch it on tv.  Show even more support and paint your face the colors of the team.  You will love taking part in this all American sport, even as a fan.

Go to a Fair

Cotton candy, elephant ears, and funnel cakes do I have to say more?  Reward yourself with fair food and games.  You know you want to win the biggest stuffed animal and why better time than fall?  By the way, who has ever won one of these animals because I am desperate to learn your tricks!

Haunted House

Go ahead and act like a girl, freak out, and freak out more, it is ok.  Haunted houses are fun and scary at the same time.  My biggest fear is the chainsaws at the end, they make me run to the car faster than I ever ran a race.  What is your favorite and scariest part?

Play in the Leaves

As soon as the colorful leaves start to fall, they call for piles and piles of fun.  Step 1, Get a rake out and make a huge pile.  Step 2, grab a friend, kid, or date and jump in!  Step 3, repeat.  Do this over and over again for an ultimate good time.

Watch a Scary Movie

Lastly on my fall bucket list, get some snuggles in.  Find a scary movie and set a date for movie time.  My favorites are It which just came out and the scariest of comedies, Scream.  Of course, any scary movie will be fit for this event.

It Was My First Time Being an Airbnb Host and Here’s What Happened

My first Airbnb hosting experience, ever.  I never stayed as a guest at an Airbnb home or let strangers pay to stay inside my home prior to becoming a host.

One day, my best friend Chris suggested I become an Airbnb host and list my home.  During this time, Airbnb’s popularity was growing and a few of my friends were successfully hosting their homes.  They said it was an easy way to make money while they were away from their home on vacation.  

Yep, they convinced me to become an Airbnb host.  Of course, it didn’t take a lot of convincing because I’m always open to new ideas. 

My Home

My listing consisted of an entire three-story home, my bedroom, my sons’ bedroom, and a spare room.  Plus, a full kitchen, mid-size living room, playroom, basement, deck, and porch.  

First, I went on a housecleaning mission to prepared for upcoming booking.  I felt like Eddie Murphy in Big Momma’s House when Big Momma cleaned the entire house, made breakfast, and took care of the kids, at the same time.  I cleaned, scrubbed, and dusted for hours.  After all, my home needed to sparkle!

Everything seemed perfect, I created towel animals for each room, laid out extra toilet paper in the bathroom, and displayed the Wi-Fi information in a frame

It was showcase time.  I took pictures of each room, posted the pictures, and went live as an Airbnb host.

  

The Waiting Game 

Next, I waited on a reservation to happen.  After two days, I thought maybe I did something wrong because my house was not booked yet.  How long did this process take?  What should have I done differently?  These are the questions I asked myself as a new Airbnb host.  Then, it occurred to me, my house was brand new, and no one likes being the Ginny pig, especially when traveling.  When least expected, I received a text message and app notification, telling me about a guest reservation.  At this moment, I felt excited, but skeptical.

Other Plans

Since I listed my entire home as being available for guests, I could not leisurely come home and spend the night in my bed.  Luckily, my son and I had a vacation planned in Portland during my guests’ stay.

My First Reaction

A million thoughts went through my mind when the date became closer.  I wondered, who are these people, how will they leave my house at checkout, will my house end up trashed?  What if they throw a party, wear my clothes like Maid in Manhattan, and maybe sneak out with a pillow or two of mine?  I needed every pillow because one pillow just isn’t enough.  At least five pillows better be on my bed when I come back, I thought.

The Guest Arrival

A van rolled up with two ladies and a man, they were from New Jersey and came to see a baseball game.  After we met, I shared a short story of the neighborhood, home, and mentioned some of my favorite attractions like the Grandview of the city. 

Finally, I passed off my key to one of the ladies and left for vacation. 

Checkout 

After the guests checked out, I came back home, and couldn’t believe my eyes.  Everything looked as I left it, the lockbox held the house key, the beds and beddings were still there, and the place remained spotless.  I thought no one would take my sons’ nerf guns or Spider-Man video games, but I still checked.  Fortunately, all his toys remained in their original place.  All in all, I felt excited and eager to be an Airbnb host again.

My Overall Thoughts 

Being an Airbnb host created an opportunity to meet new people and learn new things.  Many guests told me their traveling stories and gave me good reviews.  One review said, “Thank you for the great stay, you made us feel welcome and your home was pleasant.  Also, we really appreciated the cold water made available to us.”  This review made me feel good and overall, my hosting experiences were rewarding and enjoyable.

 

 

What Does it Mean to be 30 and Single?

What does it mean to be 30 and single?

Most of friends and I are 30 and single.  What do we call ourselves?  Single ladies like Beyoncés song, “Single Ladies”? Are we Destiny”s Child without a Destiny? Maybe housewives of Pittsburgh, with a child and without the wife part.  We could even consider ourselves being the main star of the Bachelorette show, but instead there’s no commitment at the end. Yes, I tried out for the show, but was not chosen.  

My friends and I are regulars at speed dating and haven’t got the dating part down yet, we only succeed at speed meeting.  Perhaps, the host feels bad for us.  Is it sad he knows my sons basketball schedule and my gramma and granpas name?  

30 and single!

What do other people see when they look at our group of 30-year-old single ladies?  In real life, when is the last time we went after a cute guy we spotted at Starbucks?  Probably never.  One time, I was about to make a move after my work shift in the North Side of Pittsburgh.  Then, realized I was an embarrassing human who spilt a PSL all over my light grey blouse and had a chocolate face from the instant urge to purchase and eat 5 melting chocolate chip cookies.  

Why are a group of girls like us still single and 30?  

Do we occupy ourselves with Hallmark and Lifetime specials so much that our list of expectations for a man extend further than a football field? I can say, this is not true at all, I cannot even name three shows from the Lifetime or Hallmark network.  However, I can name at least fifteen Disney shows and ten Nickelodeon cartoons.

Has the single status, doing things independently, going places alone, and calling our girlfriends become such a pattern that we know no different?  Possibly and possibly not.  We live by a routine such as going to yoga, getting manicures, and taking our kids to soccer practice.  30 and single.  Are we stuck in a solo or single mom and child pattern?

What could be the reason behind the single ladies at 30, ongoing lifestyle?  Does anyone have the answers?  Is being single meant for some and not meant for others?  Have we tried online dating?  Yes!  My failed attempts to date online have nothing to do with my personal particular choices of wanting a guy with blonde hair, white teeth, and one who wears blue sneakers.  Why the blue sneakers?  Who knows.

What about networking?  Believe me, we’ve been to almost every event in the city and strive to meet new people.  We may score a first date.  However, second, third, and ninety ninth dates never happen.  Will we ever find the one?  What are the steps?  Can we throw a love spell on someone we find attractive?  These questions remain up in the air. 

Is dating like finding a job?  

In my opinion, these two goals are very comparable.  For example, you may search online and network for prospects.  Then, you may express an interest through an application.  The result, maybe one or two companies call for an interview.  Similarly, one or two matches request a date.  Of course, all your prospects and matches end up the same way, one party decides against moving forward.  In other words, these matches do not work out.  Finally, the result is, no commitment.
How many others are single and 30?  Is this common?  Will we ever find the pot of gold?
